7 Mindset Tips to Help You Nail Your New Year's Resolutions
Plus a link to the recording of last week's goal-setting workshop for paying subscribers
Hi, I’m Caroline Ferguson, therapist and mindset trainer, and this is ‘Something More’, my newsletter about mindset, the #1 life-skill of self-awareness and exploring what a life that matters can look like. This week I include a link to the recording of our recent goal-setting workshop, though only paying subscribers will be able to access it. If you’d like to view the video, and over a dozen other recordings of live mindset training sessions, simply upgrade your subscription. I’d love to have you in our wonderfully supportive community.
Did you set new year goals this year?
Over 60% of us do – and that number goes up to a massive 85% for gen Z.
We don’t have to wait until new year to set goals to improve our lives, but there’s no doubt that the clean slate of a brand new year gives us an extra shot of energy when it comes to making changes.
Did you know that 91% of people who make new year’s resolutions fail to achieve them?
Many set the same goals year after year, so clearly something’s not working.
But the good news is that 9% of people DO achieve their goals. What are they doing differently? What makes them able to decide on an objective and nail it?
I have a few theories about that and I believe it comes down to five simple factors:
Setting the right goals in the right areas
Having the right motivation
Having the right mindset
Building a clear plan
Being able to take consistent, inspired action
I covered quite a few of those bases in the workshop I ran for subscribers last week: “How to identify and set THE RIGHT GOALS – and be motivated to achieve them”.
I invited all of my subscribers to attend live, however I keep the recording as a perk for paying members.
Einstein got it right with the quote at the top of this article. We have to find new ways to tackle our problems, and that’s what I’ve done with goal-setting.
In the session, I shared my powerful GoalStar. Using this deceptively simple tool takes just five minutes but it can help you get clarity on exactly the parts of your life that most need fixing. These are the areas that, if you’re able to bring about meaningful change, will make the biggest positive difference to your life.
I also took attendees through my GoalMASTERY formula, which you can use to set robust, actionable goals that you’re more likely to achieve.
The final thing we did was go through 7 mindset tips that can put you in a stronger position to make change happen. Here they are:
1️⃣ Give yourself explicit permission, and commit fully. Permission and commitment are among the most powerful instruments in your mindset toolkit.
2️⃣ Know how you’re motivated. Be more CARROT (‘pull’ energy – you’re motivated by moving towards a compelling vision of how life could be) and less STICK (‘push’ energy – you’re motivated by moving away from pain so when you make progress, motivation drops). There’s much more friction and energy involved in pushing.
3️⃣ Connect regularly to a clear vision of your goal. Use the power of your imagination and involve all of your senses to visualise how life could be if you reach your objective. You’ve got a head start if you regularly meditate.
4️⃣ Start where you are. Accept that you have a way to go, and that’s OK. Chunk your big goal into smaller sections and take one step at a time to avoid overwhelm
5️⃣ Find the right accountability buddy or group to keep you straight. Also work out how you’re going to regularly track and measure your progress and stay accountable to yourself.
6️⃣ Create a powerful mantra to help you stay on track. Choose a statement or question that aligns with one of your strongest values. Mine is “Today is not the day I break my promise to myself”, which sits firmly with my value of honour. It’s guaranteed to help me take action when I don’t feel like it.
7️⃣ When you falter, ask yourself the world’s most important question: “What’s the story I’m telling myself that’s leading me to feel like this?” It will help you identify limiting beliefs that could sabotage you.
